Our History
More than five decades of gospel ministry in Englewood
Calvary Baptist Church traces its roots to revival meetings held in Englewood in 1969. From sixteen people in a borrowed meeting place, God established a local church that continues serving this community today.

1969 — A church begins
On Sunday, February 2, 1969, Pastors Ray Thompson and Wally Metts held revival meetings at the Lemon Bay Women’s Club. Sixteen people attended that first meeting, and First Independent Baptist Church was born.

1970–1974 — A permanent home
In 1970 the church moved to its present location at 75 Pine St. The first building was dedicated as the Thompson building, with its first service on February 7, 1971. Under Ernest Humphries the name became Community Baptist Church, and in 1974, under Pastor Roy Perry, the church became Calvary Baptist Church.

1981–2002 — Growing the ministry
God called Wally Metts back to Englewood in November 1981. During the years that followed, the current auditorium was built in 1987, WSEB began in 1989, production of “The Lamb” began in 1992, a playground was added in 2001, and the Calvary Family Life Center was built in 2002.
Today
Continuing the work that began in 1969
In January of 2025, Daniel Cox was voted in as pastor. Calvary continues the principles upon which it was founded: reaching people with the gospel, supporting missions, and faithfully preaching the Bible.
What began with sixteen people remains a living ministry serving Englewood and the surrounding community.
